About the Author
Bunnie Rix Colson was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1957, the 3rd of 4 daughters to Duane & Gloria Rix. After her parents divorced when she was 5, she and her sisters were raised by her mother and stepfather. Both her parents and her stepfather instilled strong work ethics within the household to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table and expected the same from them with chores before and after school.
Bunnie attended many schools throughout her years living in Fort Lauderdale. As a child she was very shy and spent most of her spare time daydreaming and reading. School was challenging for her, and she was a below average student as far as grades were concerned. She used to tell people she went to the school of hard knocks. It took her many years to overcome but she never gave up. At the age of 17 she dropped out of school to get married and have a child. The marriage only lasted a couple of years and at the age of 19 she was now homeless with a 2-year-old son. Bunnie always had a job but had difficulty making ends meet. Her and her son lived in a car for about 4 years. The car did not run, but it had a roof over their heads. She stayed on the beach and would ride a bike to work with her son in a booster seat on the back. Drop him off at daycare, go to work job #1, job #2, then pick up her son on her bike and back to the car to sleep. She also managed to go back to school to get her high school diploma while trying to juggle 2 jobs and take care of a child. So, you see, Bunnie had her struggles, but she never gave up hope.
In 1982 Bunnie met Richard Colson, who was soon to become husband #2. She married him in 1983 and had her daughter the same year. Her family was now complete. In 1990 Bunnie went to college at ECPI to get her degree in bookkeeping and word processing. To find employment was nearly impossible with the pay she would need to stop working the other jobs she currently had, so she just kept plugging along, hoping that one day things will get even better. In 1999 Bunnie was once again heading for divorce court. She changed careers working as a bookkeeper/tax preparer and signed up to go back to college at ECPI. In 2002 she started her own tax business while working two jobs and going to college full time. In 2004 she bought her first home in the country, keeping up her bookkeeping/tax business, and currently still runs the business out of her home. She also graduated from ECPI Summa Cum Laude the same year getting her degree in Computer Science with an associate degree in CPAA (Certified Public Accounting Assistant}
It was in this time frame from 1999 – 2004 when Bunnie wrote the book, The Singing Princess. Originally it was not written for publication, but simply a book she wrote for her children to inspire them not to give up on their dreams. It was with the encouragement of her grandson that she elected to have the book published. Whether she will be inspired to write another book again remains to be seen. For now, she is just focused on her family and her business.
